Attention

SNAKE IDENTIFICATION is a very skilled and difficult skill due to the extreme color differences in the same species of snakes sometimes. The purpose of this page is to show how difficult it can be to identify snakes, and to encourage people to always consult a professional snake catcher when snakes or other reptiles are encountered. The following photos show the difficulty in snake identification for 2 common species found in Brisbane.

DANGER

Brown Snake

This is a VERY DANGEROUS snake being Highly Venomous. It can be many different colors and very hard to identify sometimes. A friend of mine, who mis-identified one as a harmless snake, was bitten by a baby Brown Snake, and even with anti-venom, spent a week in hospital in agony and very sick. If bitten by this snake, a compression bandage should be applied to the bitten area, and medical assistance sought as quickly as possible. Ring 000 in Australia.

SAFE

Carpet Python

The Carpet Python is a harmless non venomous snake but may still inflict a nasty bite. They are generally good to have around to keep the mice and rat numbers down however, they can sometimes cause damage in roofs knocking down lights out of their fittings etc. Sometimes relocation is warranted.

The following photos show a Carpet Python with striped coloring instead of the regular camouflage pattern, and one with the regular Brisbane local pattern that has eaten a possum.
